EU Imposes Harsh Sanctions on Russia, Targets Crypto Transactions
The European Union has unveiled its most extensive package of sanctions against Russia in two years, with a focus on restrictive measures. The new sanctions specifically target the crypto sector, imposing a total ban on providers and platforms based in Russia. According to the EU, Russia has become increasingly dependent on cryptocurrencies for international transactions. In response, the EU is introducing a comprehensive sectoral ban on Russian-based providers and platforms that facilitate the transfer and exchange of crypto assets. The EU has also banned Russia's central bank digital currency, the ruble-pegged RUBx stablecoin, and all EU support for the development of the digital ruble. The sanctions extend to 20 Russian banks, four third-country financial institutions, and entities connected to the Russian System for Transfer of Financial Messages. Additionally, the EU has imposed sanctions on TengriCoin, a Kyrgyz crypto exchange operating as Meer.kg, where significant amounts of the government-backed stablecoin A7A5 are traded. The new measures create a comprehensive crypto restriction on Russia and Belarus, prohibiting EU individuals from transacting with cryptocurrency service providers and decentralized finance platforms from these countries. The EU has also forbidden netting transactions with Russian agents to prevent the circumvention of EU sanctions. Countries referenced in the sanctions package include Kyrgyzstan, China, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.
