Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Digital Shekel

In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot program, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This collaborative effort involved the Solana network, Fireblocks, and EY, a Big Four consultancy firm, which provided auditing oversight. The stablecoin market has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, largely driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength among developed markets, bolstered by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, outperforming other currencies from countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
