Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the nation's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in partnership with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight provided by EY, BILS represents a major development in the country's financial sector. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the US. However, concerns have been raised in non-US markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty due to the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed markets, bolstered by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. With the shekel having gained over 20% against the dollar in the past year, its introduction to the blockchain ecosystem positions it alongside other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
