New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Vulnerability Without Network Changes

The developers of a new wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing using a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. On Tuesday, Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which runs on Arch Network, a platform that enables developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. The Quip wallet utilizes the WOTS+ post-quantum signature scheme, a tested cryptographic technique that does not rely on elliptic curve mathematics, which can be vulnerable to quantum computers. By leveraging a 'Layer 2' network, developers can add features to Bitcoin without altering its base layer. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, despite it being discussed by Satoshi himself. While developers estimate that a protocol upgrade could take 5 to 10 years, our approach provides similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding how to address the quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp has proposed a plan to phase out quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Paul Sztorc has suggested a hard fork. However, Quip's approach eliminates the need for a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote. The setup has its technical trade-offs, with Lopp arguing that Layer 2 protection is insufficient due to the potential for public key leakage. Nevertheless, Postquant Labs CTO Dr. Richard Carback claims that their approach reduces the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, approximately 20 minutes. The wallet app is set to launch next week, and a third-party audit is currently underway. Quip's quantum-resistant accounts are already available on Ethereum and Solana, but the Bitcoin deployment is new, and Arch Network is still in its early stages.
