Revolutionary Bitcoin Proposal Enables Satoshi Nakamoto to Verify Control Without Transferring Funds

The specter of quantum computing has long posed a challenge for Bitcoin, with a significant amount of the cryptocurrency, including approximately 1.1 million bitcoin linked to its pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, valued at around $84 billion, potentially at risk due to exposed public keys in old wallets. A proposed soft fork, or upgrade to the existing network rules, could eventually render these legacy addresses obsolete, thereby protecting them from potential quantum computer attacks, but this would require holders, including Satoshi, to transfer their assets to quantum-resistant formats or risk losing access. However, a recent proposal by Dan Robinson, a general partner at Paradigm, introduces the concept of Provable Address-Control Timestamps, or PACTs, which enables holders to generate a proof of ownership without actually moving their coins. This is achieved by creating a unique cryptographic commitment using a random salt and BIP-322, a standard for signing messages from a Bitcoin address without spending from it, and then timestamping this commitment through OpenTimestamps, a free service that anchors data onto the Bitcoin blockchain. If a soft fork that freezes quantum-vulnerable coins is implemented, the protocol could include a rescue path that accepts a STARK proof, a type of zero-knowledge proof secure against quantum computers, demonstrating that the holder created their commitment before the advent of quantum hardware. While PACTs offer a potential solution for holders, including Satoshi, to protect their assets without publicly revealing their control, the implementation of this proposal would require significant changes to Bitcoin's infrastructure, including the adoption of a STARK verification protocol, which in itself would necessitate a separate soft fork with broad community consensus. Ultimately, the success of PACTs in safeguarding Satoshi's assets depends on whether the creator or current controller of those keys takes the initiative to create a commitment, as no PACT can be retroactively generated if Satoshi is indeed no longer involved.
