Canadian Parliament Advances Proposal to Ban Crypto Donations in Elections

Canada is one step closer to banning cryptocurrency donations in political campaigns after a proposed law gained cross-party support and passed a crucial vote in Parliament. The Strong and Free Elections Act, also known as Bill C-25, aims to prohibit crypto donations, along with other difficult-to-trace funding methods, and will now undergo further review in committee. If implemented, the ban would apply to all federal election participants, including parties, candidates, and third-party advertisers, with recipients required to return any illegal donations within 30 days. The move follows a recommendation from Canada's Chief Electoral Officer to prohibit crypto donations due to concerns over pseudo-anonymity and identity verification. The proposed ban has garnered support from the Conservative party, despite their leader's previous crypto-friendly stance, and has raised little opposition, likely due to the limited use of crypto in Canadian politics to date.
