Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency
In a significant development, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token, dubbed BILS. This collaboration with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, along with auditing oversight from Big Four consultancy firm EY, marks a notable milestone. The stablecoin market, which has grown exponentially to over $300 billion in the past 18 months, is primarily dominated by U.S. dollar-pegged tokens, raising concerns about financial sovereignty in non-U.S. markets. The introduction of the shekel-backed stablecoin is seen as a strategic move, given the currency's strong performance, with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year. According to Bits of Gold, this development positions the shekel alongside other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
