KuCoin EU Enhances AML Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to satisfy regulatory requirements, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has augmented its anti-money laundering and compliance expertise. This move comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which is licensed under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework by the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO). Additionally, the company has expanded its AML function and hired seasoned compliance professionals Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure a robust and compliant operation. This development follows a challenging period for KuCoin, which has faced regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and Dubai. While Liu did not provide a specific timeline for resuming European operations, she indicated that discussions with the FMA are ongoing, underscoring the exchange's commitment to meeting the regulator's requirements.
