KuCoin EU Enhances Compliance Team to Address Regulatory Concerns
In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance team. This development comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to cease operations in the EU due to insufficient staffing in these critical areas. To rectify this, KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO). Additionally, the company has expanded its broader AML function and hired seasoned compliance professionals Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to strengthening its compliance team, highlighting several appointments made since then. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without a license. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would allow KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
