US Arrests Green Beret for Allegedly Betting on Venezuela Raid

The US Department of Justice has arrested a master sergeant in the US Army, alleging that he used classified information about a forthcoming military operation in Venezuela to place bets, resulting in significant financial gains. The accused, Gannon Ken Van Dyke, allegedly created an account on a betting platform and placed multiple bets on the outcome of the operation, including the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The DOJ has charged Van Dyke with unlawfully using confidential government information for personal gain, theft of non-public government information, and fraud. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also pursuing an insider trading complaint against Van Dyke. According to the indictment, Van Dyke was involved in the planning and execution of the military operation and used his knowledge to inform his betting decisions. After the raid, he allegedly attempted to conceal his identity and withdrew his winnings, converting them to cryptocurrency and transferring them to a brokerage account. The case has drawn attention to the issue of insider trading and the use of confidential information for personal gain, with US President Donald Trump commenting on the matter and expressing his disapproval of such practices.
