Canadian Lawmakers Advance Proposed Ban on Cryptocurrency Donations

The proposed legislation, which aims to increase transparency in political financing, will now be reviewed by a committee before potentially becoming law. If enacted, the ban would apply to all federal political entities, including registered parties, electoral district associations, and candidates, and would require recipients of illegal crypto contributions to return or remit them within 30 days. The bill's progression comes after Canada's Chief Electoral Officer recommended a prohibition on crypto donations due to concerns over pseudo-anonymity and the difficulty of verifying contributors' identities. The move is in contrast to the United States, where crypto donations have been permitted since 2014, and follows a similar ban implemented in the United Kingdom earlier this year.
