Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has officially approved the launch of a stablecoin pegged to the value of the shekel, marking a significant milestone in the country's financial landscape. This development comes after a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot process, culminating in Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold receiving authorization to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a partnership between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable resilience, supported by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management, gaining over 20% against the dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
