New Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Risk Without Network Changes

The developers of a newly introduced wallet claim to have devised a method to address the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin, without necessitating any alterations to the network itself. On Tuesday, Postquant Labs unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on Arch Network, a system enabling developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's existing security. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's core layer. The launch of Quip's wallet occurs amidst an ongoing debate regarding how Bitcoin should respond to the threat posed by quantum computing, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while Quip's approach eliminates the need for such changes.
