Coalition Unveils Plan to Mitigate Aave Token Exploit
Repairing a $300 million shortfall is no easy feat, but a coalition of crypto stakeholders is attempting to devise a solution. DeFi United, a collective of multiple blockchain projects and crypto ecosystem individuals, has proposed a detailed, step-by-step plan to restore the backing of rsETH following the Kelp DAO hack, which released over 116,000 unaccounted tokens into DeFi lending markets. The plan, circulated on Aave's official X account, resembles a coordinated damage control operation, relying heavily on Aave's infrastructure to rectify the situation and stabilize the markets. The incident originated from an attacker exploiting a vulnerability in rsETH's bridge on April 18, resulting in the unauthorized release of 116,500 rsETH tokens. These tokens were then dispersed across multiple wallets and utilized as collateral on various lending platforms, including Aave. The proposal aims to address the dual issues of restoring rsETH's backing and unwinding the loans created using the exploited tokens. DeFi United claims to have secured sufficient ETH commitments to fully re-collateralize rsETH, which will be reintroduced into the system in stages. Concurrently, the plan focuses on the lending markets, where the damage is most pronounced, and seeks to carefully unwind the chaos. A key aspect of this involves addressing the positions the attacker opened on Aave, which are essentially loans backed by rsETH that should not have existed. Rather than allowing these loans to collapse chaotically, the proposal suggests a controlled closure. Temporarily adjusting rsETH's valuation within the system will facilitate the liquidation or closure of these bad positions, enabling the recovery of underlying assets like ETH. The proposal estimates that around 13,000 ETH could be freed from Aave alone. Once the collateral is recovered, it will be converted into ETH and utilized to cover the shortfall created by the exploit. Although the process is not without risk, relying on governance approvals across multiple chains and the successful deployment of committed funds, the plan represents a more coordinated response than DeFi has often managed previously. If executed successfully, the ultimate goal is to fully restore rsETH's backing and stabilize the affected markets.
