The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible with the recent achievement of independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded 1 bitcoin, valued at approximately $78,000, by quantum security startup Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This breakthrough demonstrates the largest public demonstration of its kind, posing a potential threat to the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underlies the security of these networks, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, the use of quantum computers running Shor's algorithm challenges this assumption, making it potentially easier to crack the code. While Lelli's achievement does not immediately threaten the security of Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it marks a significant step forward in the development of quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result expands on this by a factor of 512. The rapid progress in quantum computing has significant implications for the security of cryptocurrencies, with estimates suggesting that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly. As a result, there is growing concern for wallets with public keys already visible on-chain, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin at risk.
