Sam Bankman-Fried Drops Retrial Bid, Citing Fairness Concerns

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has abandoned his request for a new trial due to concerns over the fairness of the proceedings. In a letter to the presiding judge, Bankman-Fried expressed doubts about receiving an impartial hearing. Currently serving a 25-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy related to FTX's collapse, Bankman-Fried may revive his motion after the outcome of his direct appeal and a related request for reassignment are determined. The initial motion for a retrial was submitted by his mother, Barbara Fried, citing newly discovered evidence that could warrant a retrial. Bankman-Fried drafted the motion himself while in detention, with minimal assistance, and consulted his lawyers and family members for editorial suggestions. The appeal is pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where his lawyer argued that the original trial was unfair due to restrictions on the evidence presented to the jury.
