Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Computing Threat

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computing, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be broken by quantum computers, potentially allowing attackers to steal coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those owned by the cryptocurrency's creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. The recent Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem. Although there are proposals to address the issue, such as adding quantum-safe address types or installing a detection system, none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate a response to the quantum threat. In contrast, Ethereum has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is actively working on migrating to new, quantum-safe mathematics. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to take action and protect its users' funds before it's too late.
