Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was developed in partnership with the Solana network, Fireblocks, and EY, with the latter providing auditing oversight. This development comes at a time when the stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth, exceeding $300 billion in value over the past 18 months. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about financial sovereignty in non-US markets, where payments may default to dollars as the unit of account. The Israeli shekel, which has demonstrated resilience and strong performance, is now poised to join other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, in gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems. With a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year, the shekel is well-positioned to play a significant role in the digital economy.
