US Regulator to Utilize AI for Reviewing Crypto Registration Applications
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its embrace of digital assets, is turning to artificial intelligence to offset the impact of significant workforce reductions. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is developing AI-powered tools to review registration applications and support market monitoring. This move aims to increase efficiency in the manual document submission process, enabling AI to flag incomplete or incorrect applications and prioritize them for review. The CFTC is also investing in in-house technology for analyzing swap data and conducting market surveillance. Selig emphasized the importance of embracing technology, citing the agency's use of Microsoft's Copilot and its own custom-built tools. A key initiative under Selig's leadership has been the oversight of the crypto industry, including the creation of a digital asset taxonomy in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This framework provides clarity on regulatory jurisdictions for different subsets of crypto assets, allowing market participants to engage with confidence. The CFTC is also actively policing fraud, manipulation, and insider trading in crypto markets. Additionally, the agency has been involved in contentious issues surrounding prediction markets, with Selig asserting the CFTC's exclusive jurisdiction over these businesses. The regulator has taken enforcement actions, including a recent case against a US Army soldier accused of insider trading in prediction markets. Selig reaffirmed the agency's commitment to taking action against bad actors in the markets, emphasizing the seriousness of its enforcement stance.
