Unofficial Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum
A warning has been issued by Hong Kong's monetary authority regarding the circulation of fake stablecoins, which are masquerading as legitimate under the city's newly introduced regulatory framework. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, tokens labeled 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' have been identified, but they are not affiliated with any authorized issuers. This development comes after the HKMA recently awarded its first stablecoin licenses, selecting two applicants out of 36, with the aim of mirroring the existing monetary system where a limited number of commercial banks are authorized to issue banknotes. The public has been advised to exercise caution and rely solely on official communications from licensed entities, conducting transactions only through regulated channels. Industry insiders anticipate the launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
