Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has faced scrutiny from Senate Democrats regarding reports that his family received a loan from Tether, a leading stablecoin issuer, allegedly to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of his stake in Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have sent letters to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers expressed concerns that such a loan could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence of the company on his policy decisions. The inquiry follows recent legislation governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, and Lutnick's involvement in the President's Working Group on Digital Assets. The senators emphasized the importance of making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than personal or familial financial interests. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment. Tether has been expanding its U.S. presence, including the launch of its USAT stablecoin, while Cantor Fitzgerald is now led by Lutnick's sons, Brandon and Kyle.
