Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. After a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot program, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the digital token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which has grown exponentially over the past 18 months to exceed $300 billion, is largely dominated by US dollar-pegged tokens. However, the emergence of region-specific stablecoins like BILS is expected to mitigate concerns about losing financial sovereignty in markets outside the US. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength among developed markets, buoyed by a thriving tech sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, outperforming other major currencies. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, Israel is joining the ranks of other leading economies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
