Novel Wallet Solution Addresses Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork
The developers of a newly unveiled wallet claim to have devised a method for mitigating the risks associated with quantum computing by leveraging a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without necessitating any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs announced the launch of Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on Arch Network, a platform enabling developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's existing security measures. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, built on top of Bitcoin, developers can introduce new features without modifying the base layer of the network. The launch of this wallet comes amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with proposals ranging from phasing out vulnerable addresses to implementing a hard fork. The Quip wallet offers an alternative solution that does not require a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, providing immediate protection against quantum threats.
