KuCoin EU Expands AML Team to Address Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory requirements, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) ordered the exchange to halt its European operations earlier this year, citing a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To rectify the situation, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO) and expanded its AML function. Additionally, seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler have been hired as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. 'We have been strengthening our compliance team by making numerous appointments, resulting in a significantly larger team,' Liu stated. KuCoin has recently faced challenges, including being barred from the US by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume European operations, stating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
