Breakthrough in Quantum Attack on Cryptography: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on Bitcoin's underlying technology has become more tangible with the recent achievement of independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty by quantum security startup Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This demonstration is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration in September 2025 and is considered the largest public display of this type of attack to date. The breakthrough has significant implications for the security of Bitcoin and other major blockchains, as it highlights the potential vulnerability of elliptic curve cryptography to quantum attacks. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of cryptocurrency wallets, enabling them to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, making it essential for the cryptocurrency community to migrate to quantum-safe address types and develop post-quantum transition plans. Several major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and Ripple, have already published plans for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography.
