Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over allegations that his family received a loan from Tether to facilitate the transfer of his company stake to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers expressed concerns that such a loan, if true, could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence on his policy decisions. This development comes as Congress has recently introduced new legislation governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, with Lutnick and Ardoino having been involved in the process. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not yet responded to requests for comment. Lutnick's company, Cantor, is now led by his sons, while Tether continues to expand its U.S. operations, including the launch of its USAT stablecoin.
