Israel Introduces First Regulated Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel

In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of the token, known as BILS, was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, a leading crypto custodian, with Big Four consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. The stablecoin market, which consists of crypto tokens tied to traditional financial assets like fiat currencies, has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion. This surge can be attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets, including the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as one of the top-performing fiat currencies among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP of over $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
