Bitcoin Faces Quantum Computing Threat: Can It Adapt to Prevent Catastrophic Losses?

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to protect wallets. A quantum computer can potentially break this math, allowing an attacker to steal coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those owned by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed and at risk. The recent Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem. Although some proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, aim to address the issue, they lack broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority makes it difficult for bitcoin to coordinate an effective response, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. As the threat of quantum computers looms, bitcoin's development culture and social consensus may hinder its ability to implement necessary security upgrades, leaving the network vulnerable to potential attacks.
