Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel

In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of BILS was a joint effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed market currencies, thanks to a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among nations with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
