US Regulator CFTC to Utilize AI for Crypto Registration Reviews
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its embracing stance on digital assets, is now turning to artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. According to Chairman Mike Selig, the agency is leveraging AI and automation to enhance efficiency, particularly in the review of registration applications and market surveillance, following personnel cuts under the current administration's efforts to reduce federal staffing. The CFTC is transitioning from a manual document submission process to an automated system, utilizing AI tools to review applications, identify potential issues, and streamline the feedback process. The agency is also investing in in-house technology for reviewing swap data and conducting market surveillance, with staff currently undergoing training on Microsoft's Copilot. Under Selig's leadership, the CFTC has been actively involved in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the establishment of a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions for market participants. The agency has also taken a firm stance on its exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets, engaging in legal battles with states that have challenged companies like Kalshi and Polymarket for allegedly violating state gaming laws. The CFTC has demonstrated its commitment to enforcing regulations in the crypto sector, recently joining a Department of Justice case against an individual accused of insider trading and using confidential government information for prediction-market bets.
