Unregulated Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum

Hong Kong's financial regulator has cautioned that unauthorized digital currencies are taking advantage of the city's upcoming stablecoin framework, even before the introduction of a single licensed product. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a warning that tokens bearing the 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' labels are being traded, but are not linked to any approved issuer. According to the HKMA, both stablecoin applicants mentioned in related media reports have confirmed that they have not released any regulated stablecoins. Earlier this month, the HKMA granted its first stablecoin licenses under the newly implemented Stablecoins Ordinance, selecting two groups from 36 applicants. The regulator has advised the public to exercise caution and only rely on official communications from licensed issuers, while conducting transactions through authorized channels. Market insiders anticipate the launch of licensed stablecoins during Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
