Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. financial operations, is facing questions from Senate Democrats regarding reports that his children's trust received a loan from Tether to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of his company stake to them. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on whether Tether provided financial assistance for this multi-billion-dollar transaction. The lawmakers' inquiry stems from concerns about the potential influence of Tether on Lutnick's policy decisions, should the reports of the loan be accurate. Last year, Congress passed a law governing stablecoin issuers like Tether, with CEO Ardoino attending the White House signing ceremony. Lutnick, a member of the President's Working Group on Digital Assets, was also in attendance. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not immediately responded to requests for comment. Lutnick's sons, Brandon and Kyle, now lead Cantor, while Tether continues to expand its U.S. presence with the launch of its USAT stablecoin and a U.S. arm led by Bo Hines, a former crypto adviser to President Trump.
