Unofficial Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum
A warning has been issued by Hong Kong's monetary authority regarding the presence of counterfeit stablecoins in the market, preceding the launch of any officially licensed products. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, tokens labeled 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' are being traded, but they are not associated with any approved issuer. This comes after the HKMA recently granted its first stablecoin licenses, selecting two applicants out of 36, mirroring the existing banking system where a limited number of banks are authorized to issue currency. The public has been advised to be cautious of fraudulent activities and to only use official channels for transactions. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
