Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin: the Digital Shekel

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The stablecoin, known as BILS, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. This expansion has been driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in other markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed markets, buoyed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it will join the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
