Counterfeit Stablecoins Emerge in Hong Kong Amid Regulatory Vacuum

Hong Kong's financial regulator has cautioned that fake stablecoins are taking advantage of the impending regulatory framework, even before the launch of the first authorized stablecoin. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) revealed that tokens labeled 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' are being traded, but are not affiliated with any licensed issuer. The applicants associated with these labels confirmed that they have not issued any officially sanctioned stablecoins. This development comes after the HKMA awarded its inaugural stablecoin licenses under the newly implemented Stablecoins Ordinance, selecting two applicants from a pool of 36. The regulator warned the public to be cautious of deceitful activities, advising them to only rely on official announcements from licensed entities and conduct transactions through authorized channels. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
