Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY, a leading consultancy firm. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. This surge can be attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with a 20% gain against the US dollar over the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
