Nigel Farage Under Scrutiny Over $6.7 Million Donation from Tether Billionaire

According to a report by The Guardian, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, received a substantial gift of approximately £5 million, equivalent to around $6.7 million, from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire with significant interests in the cryptocurrency company Tether. This donation was made prior to Farage's announcement to run for the Clacton seat in the 2024 election. The gift has sparked controversy, with both the Conservative and Labour parties arguing that Farage has breached House of Commons rules by not disclosing the donation. In response, a Reform UK spokesperson described the payment as a 'personal unconditional gift' that was given before Farage's election and emphasized that his decision to stand as a Member of Parliament was unrelated to the donation. The spokesperson also expressed confidence that all necessary declarations had been made in accordance with the rules. The Commons code of conduct stipulates that new MPs must register any benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election, and any benefit should be registered if there is doubt about its nature. The issue has been referred to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, with the Conservative Party seeking an examination into whether any of the donated funds were utilized for political activities rather than the stated purpose of enhancing security. This development comes amidst a broader discussion on cryptocurrency donations in UK politics, following a significant donation by Harborne to Reform UK and another by Ben Delo, co-founder of BitMEX, earlier this year. The UK government has since imposed a moratorium on crypto donations to political parties, citing concerns over the potential for foreign money to influence UK politics.
