Bitcoin Faces Looming Quantum Threat: Can It Upgrade Security Before It's Too Late?

Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks. The process of mining new blocks and the underlying ledger will remain intact, as they rely on a type of mathematics called hashing that is resistant to quantum computing. However, the ownership of bitcoins is at risk due to the use of a different mathematical approach that can be compromised by quantum computers. This type of math, known as elliptic curve cryptography, is used to secure bitcoin wallets by converting a private key into a public address. While it is easy to generate a public address from a private key, the reverse process is virtually impossible with current computers. A quantum algorithm called Shor's algorithm can significantly reduce the time required to perform this reverse calculation, potentially allowing a quantum computer to access and spend bitcoins from vulnerable wallets. A recent paper by Google has demonstrated that such an attack could be carried out with fewer resources than previously thought, highlighting the urgent need for bitcoin to upgrade its security. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. The 2021 Taproot upgrade has exacerbated the issue by publishing the key protecting remaining bitcoins at an address after a transaction. To address this threat, bitcoin developers have proposed various solutions, including the introduction of new quantum-safe address types and a detection system to trigger defensive actions in the event of a quantum attack. However, these proposals have not gained broad support, and the lack of a formal governance process and central authority in bitcoin's development culture hinders the coordination of a unified response. In contrast, Ethereum has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is actively working on migrating its security to new mathematics that are resistant to quantum computers. The success of Ethereum's approach suggests that bitcoin should start working on a solution now, rather than waiting until the threat becomes more apparent. The clock is ticking, and the bitcoin network must decide whether to prioritize its traditional decentralized governance model or take proactive steps to protect its users' assets from the looming quantum threat.
