Major Players in the Crypto Industry Unite to Support Aave Users with Hundreds of Millions in Recovery Funds
In the often-fragmented world of decentralized finance, crises can expose underlying weaknesses. However, the recent massive crypto hack has brought about an unprecedented level of cooperation. Aave, a leading DeFi lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort following significant losses tied to the Kelp DAO exploit. This endeavor, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has secured approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a remarkably coordinated industry response. 'There is a shared priority to support users and restore normal market conditions,' an Aave Labs spokesperson stated. 'Many participants have deep connections to DeFi through infrastructure, capital, or user access, and have a vested interest in ensuring market functionality.' At the heart of this effort is Aave itself, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally, while other contributors within Aave's orbit, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing significant support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with direct outreach and contributions from key players such as Consensys, which has committed up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Consensys founder Joseph Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem is at its best when it moves together. DeFi United is a broad, coordinated response to protect users and strengthen our infrastructure.' Other contributors include Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound, with proposals to allocate significant amounts of stETH and ETH to support users and limit bad debt. Entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have also made deposits or purchased AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation, alongside Tyro, contributing to the effort. These contributions demonstrate long-standing relationships between Aave and various ecosystem participants. While not all contributions are structured similarly, with some offering grants, deposits, or credit lines, they all underscore the industry's commitment to supporting users and restoring market stability. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support the coordinated remediation effort. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, with several proposals still under discussion. Nonetheless, the breadth of participation highlights the far-reaching impact of the exploit across DeFi. As Lubin noted, 'DeFi United is a testament to the Ethereum ecosystem's ability to come together in times of need, protecting users and strengthening our infrastructure.'
