Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Digital Shekel

In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the launch of a stablecoin pegged to the Israeli shekel, marking the first time such a token has been authorized in the country. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received the green light to issue the BILS token. The development of BILS was made possible through a collaborative effort with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. This surge can be attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets, including the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The introduction of the BILS token is expected to mitigate this risk, as it brings the Israeli shekel into the blockchain ecosystem. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated exceptional resilience, backed by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By bringing the shekel into the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
