KuCoin EU Boosts Anti-Money Laundering Team to Comply with Austrian Regulations
In an effort to address regulatory concerns, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has expanded its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the exchange was directed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new anti-money laundering officer, while also broadening its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu noted that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure it meets the required standards. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without a proper license. However, Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA might allow KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
