Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

Following a rigorous two-year assessment and pilot phase, the Israeli Capital Market Authority has granted approval to Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold to issue a stablecoin tied to the shekel. This development marks a significant milestone, as it introduces the shekel to the blockchain ecosystem. The stablecoin, known as BILS, is the result of a joint effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, with EY providing oversight. The global stablecoin market has witnessed substantial growth over the past 18 months, reaching over $300 billion, largely due to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about potential financial and digital sovereignty losses in non-US markets, should on-chain payments default to dollars. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed markets, bolstered by its thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among nations with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By bringing the shekel into the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being integrated into blockchain-based financial systems.
