Major Players in the Industry Unite to Support Aave Users After Massive Cryptocurrency Hack
The world of decentralized finance is often fragmented, but in times of crisis, it can reveal a surprising level of cooperation. Aave, a leading lending protocol in DeFi, is currently at the center of a massive recovery effort following significant losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, known as 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital still awaiting governance approval. The exploit has caused ripples in rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, prompting what is shaping up to be one of the most coordinated industry responses to a DeFi incident. Aave Labs has proposed a plan for the DAO to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery, while founder Stani Kulechov has pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support and Sharplink playing a strategic advisory role. Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle have also proposed contributions, including a 2,500 stETH allocation, a 5,000 ETH plan, and a 30,000 ETH credit facility loan. Babylon Foundation plans to deposit $3 million in USDT, while Renzo has supplied over $10 million from its treasury. Circle Ventures is purchasing AAVE tokens, and additional deposits have come from entities including Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also contributing. The breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi, with many participants engaging in direct outreach to provide support. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, and several proposals are still under discussion. However, the coordinated response underscores the industry's commitment to protecting users and restoring normal market conditions.
