Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the nation's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. BILS, the digital shekel, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, a leading crypto custodian, with Big Four consultancy firm EY overseeing the auditing process. This development comes at a time when the stablecoin sector has experienced exponential growth, surpassing $300 billion in the past 18 months, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the United States. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among nations with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
