Unofficial Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum
Hong Kong's financial regulator has sounded the alarm over the emergence of fake stablecoins, which are capitalizing on the city's upcoming regulatory framework for digital assets. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) revealed that tokens masquerading as legitimate stablecoins, using the ‘HKDAP’ and ‘HSBC’ tickers, are being traded in the market without any connection to licensed issuers. This development comes after the HKMA recently awarded its first stablecoin licenses under the newly enacted Stablecoins Ordinance, paving the way for the introduction of regulated stablecoins in the city. The regulator cautioned the public to exercise extreme caution and only engage with official channels and communications from licensed entities. Industry insiders anticipate the launch of authorized stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
