Senator Warren Probes Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Family Loan

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that his family received a loan from Tether to facilitate his divestment of company shares to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether's CEO, Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on whether Tether provided financial assistance for Lutnick's multi-billion dollar transfer of Cantor Fitzgerald shares to trusts tied to his children, following his assumption of the Cabinet position. The lawmakers' inquiry stems from reports of the loan, first disclosed by Bloomberg News, which they believe could raise concerns about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence of the stablecoin issuer on his policy decisions. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions that serve the public interest, rather than his family's or Tether's financial interests. The Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. Lutnick's sons, Brandon and Kyle, currently lead Cantor Fitzgerald, while Tether, headquartered in El Salvador, is expanding its U.S. presence through the launch of its USAT stablecoin and a U.S. subsidiary led by Bo Hines, a former crypto adviser to President Trump.
