KuCoin EU Expands AML Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In a move to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has bolstered its anti-money laundering (AML) and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) directed the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To rectify this, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO) and expanded its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to strengthening its compliance team, which has undergone significant expansion. The company has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the US by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
