Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin, Tied to the Shekel

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to issue the BILS token. Developed in partnership with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight from EY, this stablecoin represents a major development in the country's financial sector. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems. According to Bits of Gold, this move positions the shekel alongside other leading currencies, paving the way for its increased adoption in digital financial systems.
