Gemini Secures Derivatives License, Enters Regulated Prediction Markets
The crypto exchange, Gemini, co-founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has received approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a derivatives clearinghouse (DCO) license. This development enables Gemini to clear and settle trades internally, giving it greater control over its prediction market products. Following the announcement, Gemini's shares experienced a surge of approximately 7%. The approval marks a significant milestone in Gemini's expansion into regulated derivatives and prediction markets, which have seen a remarkable growth of over 300% in 2025, with a trading volume of $63.5 billion. Gemini is now poised to compete with established players such as Kalshi and Polymarket, and is planning to offer a comprehensive trading ecosystem, including sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. The company also intends to expand its offerings to include crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for U.S. users, as part of its broader vision to create a 'super app' for financial services.
