Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether Loan Allegations
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that a trust linked to his children received a loan from Tether. The loan allegedly helped finance Lutnick's transfer of his company stake to his children, as required by government ethics regulations upon taking office. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, expressing concerns about the potential influence of Tether on Lutnick's policy decisions if the reports are true. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than personal or financial interests. The inquiry follows the introduction of a new law governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, and Lutnick's involvement in the President's Working Group on Digital Assets. Representatives for the Department of Commerce and Tether have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
